Idea about DCUO Base Decoration System

Hello DCUO community!

I had an idea that could improve creativity when decorating Bases in DCUO!

Inspired by ESO (Elder Scrolls Online), the housing decoration system there is incredible.

Basically, you have almost no limitations. You can place objects floating in the air, intersecting with other objects, and even inside walls (though I'm not completely sure about that last one).

It's so impressive that there are plots of land in the game that are literally just empty ground, and players build amazing creations from scratch, such as ships, buildings, statues, and much more—all interactive!

In DCUO, we have the limitation that items must always be attached to a valid surface, whether that's the floor, a wall, or the ceiling. We can overlap objects to some extent, but there are still restrictions.

I imagine that reaching ESO's level of freedom would require a significant amount of programming and a major overhaul of the decoration system. However, I had an idea that might be much easier to implement.

What if selected items could never become "invalid"?

Right now, when placing an item, if it clips into a wall, collides with a column, or even passes through the ceiling, the game prevents it from being placed.

This limits our creativity.

What if the developers enabled something similar to "Move_Objects_On"?

I believe that, even with the current system's limitations, allowing unrestricted placement would greatly expand our creative possibilities and help us create even better designs.

I would like to ask the developers to consider this possibility. If it can be implemented, it would make players who love Base and League Hall decoration very happy!

Greetings from Brazil, and happy gaming!

I don't think it will happen because of the scope, but I've wanted that from day one. Just being able to put the pizza boxes on a table instead of the floor would be big 😂

Actually, the first thing I wanted was base consistency. Walls and columns in different lairs behave differently in terms of collisions and accepting what can be placed. The oddest are the gothic columns. I can hang some signs/art on them but not others. Even so, it's a shame developers didn't consider this when creating the game. Even when they did, they only saw it - at first - as an opportunity for PVP.

In every game I've ever played that allowed such things (yes, including ESO), I spent a fair amount of my idle time designing and tweaking. It's always a great diversion, adding some polish to your character.

I put some effort in DCUO base design for a few of my characters, but the limitations and items dampen my desire a bit. My favorite is my character Casino's KnightClub in Gotham. Main floor is the club, upstairs his private room, downstairs his secret lair (klugey use of the Wayne Manor bookcase with it's buggy visual to get there). If you're on USPC and ever want to see it, mail Casino and I'll add you (or even easier, your league) to the allow list.

Added both!

I'm chuckling right now because I do indeed remember your base (Achikah visited mine as well). I kept thinking two things as I watched her video. One, how the heck did he fit all of that in the Eastern Lair. I've seen people using the Wayne Manor base to get that much detail and sense of space in theirs. And Two, I'm not the only one who thought of using Ambush Bug as a bartender! 😂😂😂

Your base is possibly my all-time favorite, That and Frostwing's Frosting Queen (Achikah's Base-Off winner Sep 7, 2024 ).

So, chuckling because I would pick the person who made that base. Mine is nowhere near as good (still proud of it though). And, you might like recent additions of a maitre'd and someone to help out tending the restaurant bar in the back.

You know, as a side note, one of the things that really got me annoyed is when DCUO backed away from having old seasonal items very cheap. It practically grinds this creative activity to a halt. There's barely enough time given to pick up the new items.

Wow! Thank you for your kind words and for speaking so warmly about my base. I actually spent years decorating it, and I still feel like I could add even more things if the limit were higher than 700!

I'm flattered that you consider it one of the best bases you've ever seen, especially considering how many amazing bases are out there.

I'm aware that my base turned out really well, but I never imagined it would have that kind of impact on someone. Thank you for saying that.

I will definitely visit your base, and I'll come back soon to let you know what I think!

I hope the decorating system could be updated some day, your explanation of being able to place anything anywhere reminds me of the FFXIV floating trick with their wall items and GW2 with their X/Y/Z-axes, which would be cool if dcuo allow us to select a base item and walk around anywhere with the said item. I havent played around with ESO decorating much to accurately compare ESO vs GW2 decorating but it reminds me of GW2's decorating. I guess FFXIV and GW2 got me a little spoiled on that forgetting I hopped on DCUO and I can't just float things or have stuff on tabletops haha. I hope DCUO can get a Z-Axis one day and let us raise the item up like GW2, but not be as limiting as SWTOR's 20 point grid system (SWTOR has some rough placement hooks for large items never being able to touch a wall rip)

I’ve always said that DCUO should make an effort for the housing; it has everything it takes to be good. Unfortunately, DCUO is too lazy to do big things...

The big problem with this studio is that it always has to be an add-on that pays big, which is why they are so limited to embellish certain content that should have arrived a long time ago...

All the other studios are able to offer incredible things to their MMORPGs, but here you have to wait at least a decade for it to move...

Yet, even if the game is only on UE3, it’s a game that has so many possibilities, they just have the difficulty to grasp them...

Guild Wars or FF XIV Online are games that have evolved so much and yet they are in the same generation as DCUO...

I would also like to see the columns in the entry area just go away. They keep you from tiling floor and ceiling deco (like rugs and clouds), they're just generally in the way, and the game is inconsistent about whether you can place wall deco on them. Oh, and they are completely pointless in small bases, other than wasting space that could be used for decorating.

And I hate the layout of large bases. You can't satisfactorily put walls around the upper level, or around the area on the middle level where the mainframe is, or anywhere where the floor ends, or anywhere on the lower level, because (a) the wall sections are not sized to fit those areas without massively clipping them into each other, (b) wall sections cannot be snapped to the edges of floors, or to each other, and (c) their height means in some places, they can't be placed because they're too tall, and in others, they look bad because they don't extend to the ceiling. Plus, there's so much wasted space that you can't use, either because there are no walls/floors/ceilings where you can place items, or because you just can't place anything there.

If I was the one designing the base building system, I would make it so you choose the dimensions of your base, from a handful of presets, then give you a big empty cube and allow you access to basic walls, floors, ceilings, columns, stairs, and windows to set up whatever layout you want, along with some prefab layouts for people who don't want to go into that much detail. And yes, you would be able to put items on top of other items, so you can put pizza boxes and table lamps on tables, or your video game console on a coffee table, or your copy of Zatana's book on a shelf, or an end table, or whatever you want to place, on whichever surface. Also, amenities would not be restricted to, like, seven specific spots, and would come in a variety of styles, so they can be placed on floors or on walls (imagine a mail terminal, bank terminal, or broker terminal that is a screen or a keyboard that mounts on the wall) or even on ceilings (how about a cola vendor or an R&D vendor that is a dispenser suspended from the ceiling?).

Now, I realize that some of that would have been beyond the PS3's capabilities, and I think the base decorating was just copied over from PSN Home (or whatever it used to be called), because I noticed it was almost exactly the same, right down to the controls and parts of the UI. But we're not playing on PS3s anymore. There's no reason to keep using such a clunky, and limited, system anymore.

Totally agree.

You know. At the very least, an empty box with a variety of window, door, ceilings column, window, and stair objects is something doable right now, with the only difficulty being with stairs (which have no "ceiling") meshing with second floors (ceilings) which have collisions. But even with that you can say, well we'll start with a variety floor styles with cutouts for stairs or maybe second floors only cover a portion (like the current standard lairs).

It'd be nice too if we had bigger bases and where we could put bigger items/more items. Even the FOS/Manor base is pretty small. I get things have to be modular because of other mechanics in the game like the base pvp stuff but more items, bigger bases and more placement freedom.

Also why can't we free place our amenities. Its a silly limitation.

I wanted to add one more request in case the Devs to scan this post.

PLEASE: I would love it if all base items were pooled into my account instead of per character. (This may require some better sorting ability, but I'll take it as is). Very often, I'll end up saving a base item on one character, then (years?) later after creating a new character, I realize it could make better use of the base item.

YES, I'd love if base items were pooled to the account. Because I normally put winter base items on my main where I have a winter base, and the spring/summer on my nature where I have a nature themed base and so on. BUT I do have base items I'd like to use elsewhere for something. And I usually either have to wait for the seasonal to roll around again (and forget to buy said base items) or buy it off the broker for a inflated price.

I would like to add that the base design community would love for rhe limit to be raised from 700 to at least 1,000. When home turf first came out and gave us bases the limit was 500 items. It was raised to 600 a few years later and then eventually to 700 items. Mepps had mentioned a few months before he had left the company that they were looking into raising the limits again mentioning it on thr forum in a reply. Nothing was changed since the release of larger bases since manor or house of legend bases.
